A Blueprint for Building Quality Participation in Sport for Children, Youth, and Adults Participating in Powerchair Sport

Published: November 2025

This Blueprint is the first step in understanding ways to offer quality participation opportunities in sport for powerchair users. The Blueprint applies the six building blocks of quality participation (autonomy, belongingness, challenge, engagement, mastery, and meaning) to powerchair sport, sharing examples and strategies to create safe, welcoming and inclusive sport opportunities for powerchair users.

The practical guidance inside the Blueprint offers easy to use ways to inspire more, or build upon current sport programs for powerchair athletes. Through the use of storytelling and lived experience, this Blueprint shares practical considerations and examples to foster quality experiences in powerchair sport programs. For even more details about powerchair sport and how to create or enhance powerchair sport programs, please check out the companion guide, The Powerchair Playbook: A Guide to Starting or Enhancing Powerchair Sport Programs.

The Blueprint for Building Quality Participation in Sport for Children, Youth, and Adults Participating in Powerchair Sport was developed in collaboration with PowerHockey Canada. For more details about coaching PowerHockey, please check out their Community Coaches Training Program.
